CCMD™ Mission Statement
The Burden of Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. More people
die each year from CVD than from any other cause. Recent estimates indicate that
more than 81 million people in the United States have one or more forms of CVD,
and while declines in mortality have been noted, CVD remains a significant health
and economic burden. Thus, it is increasingly important that physicians and other
healthcare professionals remain armed with the latest scientific data and resources
that will enable them to decrease risk and improve outcomes among patients at risk
for or with CVD.
Where We Come In
The Committee on Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases™ (CCMD™) is uniquely
poised to address this need. A multifaceted educational initiative, the CCMD provides
programs and resources that focus on the management of cardiovascular and metabolic
diseases as a means to prevent or reduce global cardiovascular risk. Through its
innovative programs and award-winning website, CCMDweb.org, the CCMD educates physicians
and other healthcare professionals about global cardiovascular risk focus, highlighting
many conditions that affect the vasculature, including dyslipidemia, hypertension,
diabetes, stroke, inflammation, and obesity. Given its curriculum is based on the
evolving landscape of clinical-trial data and therapeutic guidelines, CCMD content
is continually adjusted and refined to reflect the latest clinically relevant findings.
The CCMD launched in 1996 as Lipid Management in Clinical Practice and quickly evolved
into the widely recognized and respected National Lipid Education Council® (NLEC®).
In 2006, the initiative expanded into the CCMD. The CCMD stands as a premier, independent
initiative guided by a multidisciplinary panel of experts in cardiology, endocrinology,
and primary care.
Our Distinguished Faculty
Co-chaired by Antonio M. Gotto, Jr, MD, DPhil, and Robert H. Eckel, MD, and led
by an Education Council of esteemed thought leaders, the CCMD draws on the expertise
of nearly 50 faculty members.
The CCMD is sponsored by Clinical Bridges™, Secaucus, NJ. Clinical Bridges
is a division of KnowledgePoint360 Group, LLC.
The information found on CCMDweb.org is designed to support, not to replace, the
relationship between the patient and the physician.
